The criterion
We kept perfumes whose dominant accord is woody, labelled feminine or unisex, with a complete page and a real offer on a bottle of at least 30 ml. Ranked by the cumulative intensity of the woody, patchouli and green accords.
Green woods: the most distinctive
Costa Azzurra — Tom Ford, eau de parfum, 2014, from €99 Woody, green, marine. The best score in the selection. Oak, juniper and marine notes: a Mediterranean woody, dry and mineral. Green is a rare accord — 61 perfumes, 3% of the catalogue.
Original Vetiver — Creed, eau de parfum, 2004, from €220 Woody, citrus, green. Three accords around vetiver, a material present in 316 perfumes and 83% of the time as a base note — it is what ensures longevity.

Floral woods: the entry level of the family
This is the most widespread pattern in all of perfumery: our analysis of accord pairings shows that woody + floral is the most frequent pair in the catalogue, with 645 perfumes. Wood provides longevity, flower provides character.

The classics and the rare
Calandre — Paco Rabanne, eau de toilette, 1969, from €71 Woody, floral, citrus, musky. The oldest in the selection, and one of the oldest perfumes still in production in the catalogue. A metallic, aldehydic rose: direct testimony of a vanished aesthetic.
Yvresse — Yves Saint Laurent, eau de toilette, 1993, from €90 Woody, aromatic, warm spicy, gourmand. A fruity chypre with peach and rose, in a register that is hardly made any more.
French Santal — Olfactive Alchimie, extrait, from €60 Woody, amber. Only two accords — an extrait at €60, which is little for this format.
XXY — Xerjoff, from €600 Woody, floral, gourmand, musky. The most expensive offering on the page, by a long way.
How to approach a woody when you don’t wear one
Start with a floral or fruity woody, not a dry vetiver. Wood alone can seem austere if you come from florals; paired with a flower or a fruit, it lets itself be tamed. Most of the entries under €50 on this page are built this way.
Woody is one of the families that lasts best. Woody materials are base materials — sandalwood 92% in the base, vetiver 83%, cedar 75%. You can therefore spray less than usual: the effect will last longer.
