The best spring perfumes (a selection built on composition)

Spring is not summer. A spring perfume has to hold up through a day that starts at 8 °C and ends at 20 °C — which rules out hesperidic ice cubes as much as winter ambers.

3 min read

Spring is the season worst served by perfume selections, because it is treated as an early summer. It is not. A spring day starts at 8 °C and ends at 20 °C: a purely hesperidic perfume vanishes in the morning, a winter amber becomes heavy in the afternoon.

The criterion

We queried the 2,023 compositions recorded in the catalogue and kept perfumes where:

  1. The dominant accord is floral, green, citrus or fruity.
  2. No heavy accord — amber, tobacco, leather, smoky, gourmand — weighs strongly in the composition.
  3. A real offer exists on a bottle of at least 30 ml.

Ranking is by the gap between springlike accords and heavy accords — a composition score, not a fame score.

Green florals: the heart of the season

Un Jardin sur le Nil — Hermès, eau de toilette, 2005, from €46 Green, citrus, woody, floral. Green mango and lotus give a plant freshness rather than a hesperidic one — exactly what summer perfumes worn too early in the year lack. Our first recommendation of the season.

Un Jardin sur le Toit — Hermès, eau de toilette, 2011, from €47 Green, fruity, floral. Apple, pear, cut grass. An urban garden, literally.

Nomade — Chloé, eau de parfum, 2018, from €40 Floral, green, fruity, musky. Plum and honeysuckle on an oakmoss base: more longevity than the average on this page, thanks to its eau de parfum concentration.

Daisy — Marc Jacobs, eau de toilette, 2007, from €33 Floral, fruity, musky, green. Light, clean, unpretentious — and the cheapest in the selection.

Fruity hesperidics: for days that warm up

Light Blue — Dolce & Gabbana, eau de toilette, 2001, from €43 Citrus, fruity, floral, woody. The best suitability score of the whole selection. Green apple and citron on a base of cedar and musk: it is the very definition of the mid-season perfume, and its commercial longevity (more than twenty years) is no accident.

Regio — Xerjoff, from €270 Citrus, floral, musky. The most luxurious offering on the page, for those looking for a crafted hesperidic.

Powdery florals: when it is still cool

Chloé Eau de Parfum — Chloé, eau de parfum, 2008, from €38 Floral, powdery, musky, fruity. A modern powdery rose. Powdery concerns only 4% of the catalogue: it is a rare register, and it works particularly well on still-cool days.

Trésor — Lancôme, eau de parfum, 1990, from €35 Floral, powdery, fruity, vanilla, amber. The warmest in the selection — to be kept for April evenings, when the temperature drops back.

The niche ones, to leave the beaten track

Juliette — Juliette Has a Gun, eau de parfum, from €145 Fruity, floral, woody.

Isla Bohemia — Carner Barcelona, from €170 Floral, fruity, musky.

Marbella — Carner Barcelona, from €170 Floral, fruity, musky.

Babylonia — Ormonde Jayne, from €195 Floral, citrus, warm spicy, fruity. A house with a rather warm-spicy temperament — here tempered by florals and citrus.

How to wear a perfume in spring

Adapt the dose to the temperature, not to habit. The same perfume, at the same dose, projects more at 20 °C than at 8 °C. Two sprays on a March morning can become three too many in May.

Spring is the season of eaux de toilette. Eight of the twelve references above are. A high concentration serves longevity in cold weather; in mild weather, it mainly serves to saturate.

Do not put your winter perfumes away too quickly. A March day at 8 °C welcomes a woody very well. What matters is not the month on the calendar, but the temperature outside — which is, incidentally, the marker we display on every perfume page, in the Scent profile section.

For some of the perfumes mentioned, the notes, years and concentrations are taken from unofficial sources (not from the house); the relevant page says so.
